March’s Stroll Down Memory Lane

After having a well-planned and executed February date, March’s date was rather disorganized by comparison. Perhaps we shouldn’t ever leave the comfort of our own home after all. That, or we need to do more planning before we go on our dates.

Cost:

You guessed it…$100.

The Plan:

Take a stroll down memory lane to celebrate our dating anniversary. We’ll hangout in downtown La Jolla, maybe visit our engagement spot, and have dinner at Whisknladle.

To start things off, we went to Bird Rock Coffee Bar for coffee and a relaxing start to our date. For coffee-lovers out there, Bird Rock is one of the best in San Diego, and we highly recommend it. We had a lovely time chatting about how much we missed Taiwan and all the awesome food there.

Then we tried to go to the park where I proposed, and this is where things started unraveling. The weather was beautiful, so downtown La Jolla was packed with cars and people. We couldn’t find a place to park, and finally gave up after circling the park a couple times in heavy traffic. Feeling a bit frustrated, we abandoned the original plan and went to comfort ourselves with food.

We decided to grab a snack at Puesto, a gourmet taco restaurant right next to Whisknladle. We shared the chicken verde, carnitas, and lamb barbacoa tacos, along with a frozen horchata. The tacos were delicious but rather small. The frozen horchata was especially good.

Now onto the main event, Whisknladle. We went during happy hour [4PM-6PM daily] to try out their happy hour menu in addition to their dinner menu. During happy hour, select drinks and tapas [appetizers] are $5.55 each. Their drinks selection was good; they offer handcrafted cocktails, as well as a wide variety of draft beer and wines.

I got a refreshing glass of sangria, and to start things off, we tried the patatas bravas, gambas al ajillo, and yellowtail crudo. The patatas bravas came highly recommended, but were too heavy and rich for our tastes. The yellowtail, however, was perfect. For our main course, we shared a delicious roasted rack of lamb. Pretty good, but Tiffany was less impressed by this dish after the “melt-worthy” lamb chops in Ojai.

After dinner, we took a walk along the ocean, and ended our date watching the sunset together.

Tips:

  • WhisknLadle’s happy hour menu is only available at/around the bar indoors. Happy hour for drinks is from 3-5PM daily. Tapas happy hour runs from 3PM-closing.
  • The dinner area at WhisknLadle can get crowded. Fortunately, you can make reservations on their website online.
  • Parking in downtown La Jolla is atrocious. Be prepared to park farther and walk, or circle around the block several times.
