Feeling spontaneous, Tiffany and I decided to go to KULA Revolving Sushi Bar on Labor Day. We were in the neighborhood at the time and the heat made us decide to go for something light and close-by. Once again, we ran into a giant line of people outside. I feel like we can’t really be blamed this time because they don’t take reservations and it was 3PM! No restaurant should be this busy during non-peak hours, even on a holiday.

The nice thing about this restaurant is that pretty much everything is electronic. You sign in on an Ipad. They then text you a confirmation number, and text again about 20 minutes before you will be seated. This gives you plenty of time to explore the area, and still be able to come back in time to be called in.
Once seated, the waitress gave us a quick tutorial on how to grab the dishes off the conveyor belt, and we were good to go. The menu offers a good selection of nigiri, rolls, hand rolls, appetizers, and desserts. Each dish costs $2.25 and contain 2 pieces of nigiri (or 1 piece of special nigiri), 3-4 pieces of a roll, or a serving of other items. They also have items like udon and ramen. You can either wait for the dish you want to come by, or order it on the touch screen next to your table. The ordered items will come to you on a separate conveyor belt pretty quickly.
The food was average, slightly better than say, your average all-you-can-eat sushi place. Overall, the food quality is decent considering the price and selection. Salmon belly nigiri was good, but nothing else was too memorable. Their wasabi is slightly different from the usual soulless green paste; it had more texture and flavor to it. We finished off our meal with cheesecake and green tea ice cream.
Conclusion: Overall, it was an enjoyable experience–much more exciting than stuffing your face with AYCE sushi. The touch screen plays some random animation for every 5 dishes that you finish, and you get a little prize when you finish 15 plates. Having a visual menu and the ability to look at the dishes while they pass by is helpful and convenient to decide what you want (or help you decide to order if the dish looks stale from rotating around for too long). However, I would mainly come here for the fun experience. Otherwise, go to AYCE for more value, or somewhere pricier for better quality fish.
- Pace yourself! It’s easy to get excited and start grabbing multiple plates, but worry not. It’s called a revolving bar for a reason.
- Be sure to keep track of how many plates you’ve had (which you can easily check on the screen above your table). When I’m not ordering items off a menu, it’s sometimes harder to remember that this is not all-you-can-eat.
- Prepare for a long wait. As I mentioned, we came to this place mid-afternoon on a weekday, and we still waited an hour to get seated. And sadly, they don’t take reservations.
